LinkedList NYC

Issue #73 - July 4, 2012

Hi Listheads,

"Let the annual return of this day forever refresh our recollections of these rights, and an undiminished devotion to them." Jefferson

Tonight, 7/4

Independence Day Fireworks ★ america 9pm Hudson River
The List searched for a secret, uncrowded spot to watch the fireworks, but we didn't find one [Or did we? - Ed.]. If you're lucky, you have a friend with a well situated roof. If not, there's always NBC. Happy Independence Day!

Sunday, 7/8

Ice Cream Takedown @ The Bell House food 2pm 149 7th St, Brooklyn
Spend your afternoon eating 30 flavors of ice cream. Admittedly, this sounds like a normal Sunday to us, but apparently there's also some sort of competition involved.

Tuesday, 1/10

Knowledge Extraction with Lisp @ Google meetup 7pm 76 9th Ave, Manhattan
Knowledge extraction from Wikipedia with Lisp, including algorithms for clustering and generating topic taxonomies. These are essential steps along the path to the Singularity, which the List hopes will support full macros.

Sizes of Infinity @ Brooklyn Brainery class 8:30pm 515 Court St
The List is irrationally excited about this class, so we can't count the number of ways it looks awesome. [Q: Why do people read the List? A. For its witty Cantor. -Ed.]

The future

HOPE Number Nine conference 7/13-7/15 401 7th Ave, Manhattan
HOPE Number Nine is next weekend and features everything from Eben Moglen to chiptunes concerts. The List presented a project of ours at the Last HOPE (not the Next HOPE, which was actually the last HOPE) and had a blast. (H/t to LinkedLister Gus Andrews.)

Reading you won't regret

What to the Slave is The 4th of July history 10 min
A speech given by Fredrick Douglass to the Rochester Anti-Slavery Sewing Society on July 4th, 1852. The List reads this every year as a reminder of how far we've come and how far we have to go.

A fun idea

Explore the city's underground art. There are art installations throughout the subway system, and the MTA has a handy app to help you find them. Make sure to check out two of the Lists favorites: the animation visible from the Q train while passing the abandoned Myrtle Ave stop north of DeKalb, and the little guys you can sit next to at 8th Ave.

That's all for this week. Send jokes, tips, and rants to tips@linkedlistnyc.org.

Peace out, cub scouts.

Nick & Dave

P.S. Enjoy the List? Spread the love and share it with a friend.
