Hi Listheads,
"Don't do anything that someone else can do. Don't undertake a project unless it is manifestly important and nearly impossible." — Edwin Land.
Checkmate 101 class outdoors 6:30pm Pier 1, Brooklyn
Free knight-time chess instruction. Remember: You can't horse around or pawn off responsibility on others if you want to become a chess master, nor can you play strictly by the rook. Note: This class is in Kings county, not Queens. (H/t to LinkedLister Ron Feldman.)
Puccini in the Park culture outdoors 7:30pm Central Park, Manhattan
Free opera in Central Park. It'll be a tragedy if you don't go [It's Tosca, so it'll be a tragedy regardless. -Ed.].
JavaScript Hackathon hackathon 9am 166 Crosby St, Manhattan
The first in a series of language-based hackathons. We'll finally find out what happens when you add a bunch of JavaScript devs together [Don't they all just get converted to strings? -Ed.]. (H/t to LinkedLister Nathan Hamblen.)
Mathematical Intuition Gone Awry lecture 7/11 55 Lexington Ave, Manhattan
Probable spoilers: Always change doors, it's more likely the other child is also a girl, and you should assume some people in the room share a birthday.
What is the Execution Context? javascript 20 min
A good overview of "execution contexts" in JavaScript. Understanding execution contexts will help demystify some important parts of JavaScript, including hoisting. Shameless plug: The List's own Understanding `this` in JavaScript is a nice companion read.
Ride the impossibly slow elevator at the Impossible Project. A group of enthusiasts saved the last Polaroid factory from closing in 2008, and have since dedicated themselves to manufacturing Polaroid film. They have a showroom and store in New York, which the List visited recently. We were honestly a bit disappointed (it's mostly just a store), however, we enjoyed riding their elevator, which took 1 min and 24 sec to go five stories! Ring the buzzer for #5 at 425 Broadway and see for yourself. (H/t to Girlfriend of the List Kimberly Lin for the find.)
That's all for this week. Send jokes, tips, and rants to tips@linkedlistnyc.org.
Peace out, cub scouts.
Nick & Dave
