LinkedList NYC

Issue #66 - May 16, 2012

Hi Listheads,

We think this is a devilishly good issue, or at least 6600% of one.

Tonight, 5/16

Secret Science Club: Ignorance lecture 8pm 149 7th St, Brooklyn
Ignorance author and Columbia biology chair Stuart Firestein talks about what humans don't know. This is a topic the List has deep personal knowledge of.

Saturday, 5/19

First Day of Free Kayaking outdoors 9am-6pm Pier 96, Manhattan
Free kayaking in the Hudson River returns for the summer. You can go for a quick outing, do a class, or take a three-hour trip to NJ. Note: This is the good kind of kayaking tip.

NYC Physics & Math Self-Learners Meetup meetup 12pm 80 Cadman Plaza West, Brooklyn
A good opportunity to get past your moment of inertia, realize your potential, and gain some momentum [That pun should have you spinning in circles. -Ed].

Monday, 5/21

Using CoffeeScript in Production meetup 6:30pm 200 Varick St, Manhattan
The List uses CoffeeScript in production and we love it. It's been a breeze ever since DHH and co. added it to the asset pipeline over the objections of half of HN [The Ruby community is full of ass-ets. -Ed.].

Reading you won't regret

Taste for Makers create 25 min
The List has read this Paul Graham essay several times for inspiration over the past decade. It remains a pleasure to read and includes some gems. Our favorite line: "The recipe for great work is: very exacting taste, plus the ability to gratify it."

A fun idea

Go look at graffiti. Take the 7 to Court Square and walk a few short blocks south. There you'll find 5Pointz, a 200,000-square-foot factory covered with gorgeous art, considered the world's "graffiti Mecca." The List visited on a recent sunny Sunday afternoon and spoke with a friendly volunteer who told us the pieces usually last anywhere from a few days to a few years before being painted over, depending on location and quality. Unsurprisingly, the List liked the New York themed art the most.

That's all for this week. Send jokes, tips, and rants to tips@linkedlistnyc.org.

Peace out, cub scouts.
