LinkedList NYC

Issue #54 - February 22, 2012

Hi Listheads,

Happy Hash Wednesday! This year the List's giving up automatic type coercion for Lint.

We got some good responses to our monad challenge. LinkedLister Matthew Pellegrino [We bet he's sparkly! -Ed.] wins the award for shortest definition ("A way to run functions in a specific order while allowing you to do 'some stuff' in between") and LinkedLister Chris Davidson wins for most comprehensive (Monads for functional programming). Honorary mention goes to Friend of the List Sam Stokes for sharing his excellent HN comment.

Tomorrow

Practical CS Fundamentals class $15 7pm 416 W 13th St, Manhattan
A practical introduction to some computer science fundamentals including sorting and Big-O notation. This class should teach you everything you need to understand the List's jokes [Not really, but it will give you a start. -Ed.]

This weekend

Photo Hack Day 2 @ GA hackathon Feb 25-26 902 Broadway, Manhattan
These *Hack Days are becoming a regular occurrence. The last Photo Hack Day went so well that Aviary has decided to do it again. Our favorite part is seeing how the prizes and penalties stack up. Winners get an iPad 2 from Face.com and an Xbox and Kinect from Microsoft. Losers get a Blackberry PlayBook.

Wednesday, 2/29

How Chartbeat Uses Django @ Yipit meetup 6pm 3 West 18th St, Manhattan
Allan Beaufour, the CTO of Chartbeat, will talk about how Chartbeat uses Django. [The List thought everyone knew that Real Programmers write CGI scripts in C.\r\n\r\n - Ed.]

Hack & Tell @ Meetup meetup 6:30pm 632 Broadway, Manhattan
The List's favorite meetup returns! The shibboleth to get in this week is pronouncing Andrew's last name.

Design Pattern Craftsmanship @ Etsy talk 6:30pm 55 Washington St, Brooklyn
Jason Beaird from MailChimp talks about design patterns that MailChimp uses and a library they wrote. We love MailChimp because they're responsible for delivering the List each week. Just don't tell them we're on the free plan and the "Sent with MailChimp" logo has never shown up.

The future

Math Encounters with Peter Norvig talk March 7 55 Lexington Ave, Manhattan
Peter Norvig will talk about "communication as a game of numbers" and using math to build computational models for speech recognition and spelling correction. The 6:30pm presentation is already full (though you can still get on the wait list) and the 4pm one will likely fill up as well.

Reading you won't regret

Introduction to Shift-Reduce Parsing compilers 30 min
The List has been on a parsing kick. Just look at all our calculators. This is a good introduction to shift-reduce parsers (the kind that yacc and bison generate). You probably won't write any shift-reduce parsers by hand, but you need to know how they work if you're into compilers and programming languages. The article walks through building an LR(0) machine for a simple calculator. Unfortunately it only glosses over lookahead parsers. If anyone knows of an intuitive explanation of LALR(1) parsers, including First and Follow sets, we'd love to see it. Send it to tips@linkedlistnyc.org.

A fun idea

Explore City Island. Take the 6 to Pelham Bay Park (the end of the line) and transfer to the Bx29 to City Island. Wander down the main commercial drag, City Island Ave, and explore a part of the city like no other. Be sure to try some fresh seafood (the List enjoyed the lobster, garlic bread, and kitschy atmosphere at Crab Shanty) and duck into the antique and art stores. They're brimming with old junk and Turner-inspired boat paintings and are operated by delightful characters that dispense unrequested life advice. Walk down the side streets that lead to private piers and beaches. You can see the Manhattan skyline to the southwest, and you might stumble across a marina.

That's all for this week. Send jokes, tips, and rants to tips@linkedlistnyc.org.

Peace out, cub scouts.
